The Secret to College Sports Passion

I am fortunate! My parents believed in a college education and supported me during my first round. When I decided to go back to school, my wife supported the idea also. We lived in married student housing about 3 miles off-campus.

I was a serious student the second go round. I had to be with my wife supporting me on a school teacher's salary! We didn't have a lot of money and entertainment was a luxury. We both look back on those days in amazement that we actually scraped enough money together to go see "Raiders of the Lost Ark" in the theater, twice!

We discovered early on that my tuition payed for football tickets! So we would make a day of it. There was a bike trail that lead almost all the way to campus. When the game started at 2PM, we would leave the apartment about 10 AM. We would pack something to eat, or when we had the money, we would stop by a burger joint near campus for lunch.

We arrived at the stadium before it opened for the game after picking up a newspaper on the way. We entered the stadium about an hour or so before kickoff. We watched the stadium fill to capacity and read the paper until the band started the pre-game show.

The band was always great! They would play and march right up until kickoff. Then we watched our team in action against the best in the conference.

Then one day, I saw a man, the opposing coach, leaning against the goal post watching his "boys" in their pre-game warm-up. He was wearing the iconic hounds tooth jacket and hat. The Bear! It was at that point that I realized I had been watching the best in college football!

That's what college sports means to me. The secret to the passion is all the memories! Watching your favorite team in action against the best the league has to offer.

As a mat supplier, I found I could offer team logo mats as cheaply as anyone in the business, due to my contacts. Now I have also expanded that offering to other team logo merchandise at exciting prices as well.

May the passion live long for your favorite team, as it does for mine!

Crimson Tide Season Preview

John Parker Wilson looked fantastic in the first half of the spring game (13 of 14 attempts). In the second half of the game he showed his inexperience. That's probably a good indication of the offensive season ahead. A great quarterback with little experience in the SEC battles will have shining moments followed by unexpected setbacks. As long as he doesn't get down on himself and learns from each mistake, the future looks bright! He brings scrambling ability that Alabama fans did not see much of from Brodie Croyle. Starting the season at home against Hawaii, Vandy and Louisiana Monroe should give Wilson time to get his grid iron legs.

Probably the key to the offense is going to be improved protection for the quarterback. This began in the Cotton Bowl with the move of Antoine Caldwell to center. With 9 returning offensive starters from last year, the Crimson Tide may prove to be an offensive force to be reckoned with in the West. Tyrone Prothro believes he will be back after off-season surgery. Kenneth Darby has shown what he can do from the running back position and D.J. Hall along with Keith Brown provide great targets for Wilson to hit. If Prothro can make it back, WOW! Look for a great offensive season from the Tide!

The Tide will need to do better than last year's 85th in scoring on the offense. With the defense only having 4 returning starters, questions abound defensively. As we all know, defense wins championships. Can the Tide fill in the gaps? Will they have sufficient depth to maintain the D?

The key statistics to watch early in the season are third down conversions and quarterback sacks. Yes, that puts Alabama's season firmly on the shoulders of their offensive line and quarterback play. The potential is there for a great offensive season. If the offense can convert on third downs and keep the defense resting on the sidelines, and score touchdowns, then the young defense will have time to mature somewhat before the meat of the SEC comes calling. If the Crimson Tide completes their first three games with wins greater than 7 points, they will be contenders for the SEC West title. If the offensive line struggles and places too much dependence on a very young defense, the Tide will be hurting come November!
